Single female seeks companion

2nd June 2012

windblownA walk in the Woodland Trust's woods at Migdale revealed this wind-blown tree.  The crown was starting to coming into leaf, and was found to bear a good crop of female catkins (though only above the deer browse-line).  Unfortunately these catkins will only produce viable seed if there was aspen pollen around when the flowers were receptive.

The rich bronze colouration of these newly-emerged leaves is a feature of many clones as they first come into leaf.
