Female catkins

30th April 2012

fluffyGS24Aspen rarely flowers in Scotland, making it tricky for us to propagate more than a few hundred trees annually.  This prompted us to set up a trial at Kincraig to see if we could produce aspen seed under controlled conditions in a polytunnel.

This year, 5 clones flowered.  One female produced almost 100 catkins (pictured).  Unfortunately male catkins matured earlier than the females so we're uncertain whether they'll be any viable seed.  We'll be checking for seed this week.
