Identifying Aspen

Aspen Populus tremula has many features which help identification at all seasons:

  • its leaves flutter, even in a light wind
  • it often occurs in clusters (clones)
  • it often has bright autumn colours
  • it comes into leaf later than almost any other broadleaved tree

It is not easily confused with other trees, but Aspen can hybridise with other poplars, such as Populus alba.

You can report suspected hybrids when submitting records.
